has anyone ever seen, or does anyone know of a parasail that ISN'T round, but a square, ram-air canopy?

I always wanted a lean more fun than just be thank you to the wind and the captain. Being able to guide would be nice. Does anyone know a place that now?

I realize that there are ram-air canopies, but all transactions Commercia sailing I've ever seen do not use it because their insurance prohibits this type of channel. Where can you get? I ask around a parachuting club. these guys would know!

Is it really worth owning a boat for skiing?

Jun 28, 2009 by Chris R Categorized Under: Boats & Boating

We complete about 1 mile from a large lake, and my wife and I are thinking about buying a boat. I've heard an old saying "The unexcelled time that you own a boat is when you first buy it, and when you sell it".

Is that really true. Does water skiing / tubing get old? Do most lakes let you do grit like parasail (Kind of low end hang gliding off a ski rope).

I'm curious and know nothing about it. I live in Texas too if that makes any unlikeness.

I guess I'm just asking does it get boring? Does the maintenance start becoming a real nuisance in the *$&$*%. Is it worth all the stops that the park rangers or lake police give you to inspect your boat etc.

I'm exactly curious to the overall jist of boat ownership - but mainly is it worth it? (We are in our younger 30's with 5 kids)

Thanks
Redact - Does it compare to the fun / maintenance you can have with something like an RV?

If you go into boat purchasing answer well informed and educated on how to do it correctly, it is not a horrible experience.

If you jump into the boat buying process with practically nil training, you can bet on getting burned very hurriedly.

First off, before you consider even buying a boat. If you do not have any significant boating experience, then it is very important and some states legally required for you look boater education and pass your state's boater education exam. Check your state's boating laws and regulations to back up.

Boating on a lake, river, ocean isn't just like getting in a automobile and driving to whereever. You must be fully refined on boating responsibilities and develop skills to safely operate a boat on the water.

Properly screening any boats you show interest in seeing for buy is 80% of the work. You must have a trained eye for this, people new to boat shopping are not experienced enough to notice these warning signs.

That's why its principal to have a reliable and objective friend who is highly experienced in boating and has made good boat purchasing decisions. (That means it doesn't look or run like a chest assemble of crap all the time).

For the first couple of trips, bring this friend with you and go to the boat choices you made that are the oldest and cheapest. This is where he can purport out things that might show up. Things that might require fixing when you buy it, and some other things that indicate this boat could be a financial nightmare.

Pay extremely shut off attention to his advice on what he tells you to look at and look for. Bring a notepad or something to write this info down and the info about the boat. When this efficient boating friend says, "if you see this problem on a boat, walk away", you do exactly that".

Do not clear the way a buying decision or a test drive decision while looking at these boats. Go home, review your written notes about all of the boats you have gone to charges out, do a comparison of the data and make a decision on if you want to test drive any of these boats.

When you decide to do a investigation drive, you better already know how to safely and legally operate this vessel on the water. The test goad should be all focused on boat performance, you are there to verify the operating condition of the vessel.

Does it take long to start, does it die regularly after the mechanism has warmed up to operating temp?
Does it hesitate for a long time when given significant throttle?
Does the throttle cut out any during cruising quickness/RPM's?
Is there any excessive vibration or unusual noise occurring?
Do any of the gauges not work correctly?

Now, lets say you've picked the master one out of test driving multiple boats. If you are purchasing from a private owner, it is YOUR legal responsibility to insist the boat be taken to a marine service shop of your choice to be inspected at YOUR expense, as the buyer.

There are no lemon laws that screen people that purchase used boats from private owners.

As for maintenance costs, IF you regularly do what is stated in owners/employ manuals for drive system maintenance at the stated intervals, then maintenance costs stay mostly reasonable. However, as with apparatus that we regularly use heavily, things break down and cost money to fix. There is no escaping that, except with maybe a row boat.

Regarding fun level and vim, it depends on what you are trying to do. If you only try to pull people on the tube, cruise around, and stop a while, then yes it will get boring at times.

However, if you and your kinsmen regularly participate in different methods of towables, and rotate the people around alot, it doesn't get surely as boring.

Learning how to kneeboard, dual and slalom ski, and wakeboard keeps towables fun and challenging for you and your bride. There are basic tricks you can practice with the kneeboard and wakeboard to give you challenging things to try out. At least you and your wife can wipe out in form practicing some board tricks while entertaining the kids by attempting it. If you or your wife nails a new trick, mark-up bragging rights!!!

If you have difficulties in trying to learn how to ride a wakeboard, you might wanna buy a good instructional video on the basics. Once you get the drape of it, its not any harder than slalom skiing.

In short, mixing it up with a variety of towable choices and regularly changing it up on the O makes for an enjoyable boating trip. 17 years of tearing up the water taught me that.
