Do i need insurance for an inflatable dinghy?

Aug 04, 2008 by scott s Categorized Under: Boats & Boating

I have a Intex Seahawk 400 inflatable boat. This is a non-powered craft and I want to know if I should provide cover for 3rd party if I use it on the river UK?

Study on the personal accident insurance - especially if a cruiser coming around a curve too fast, do not see you!

Dinghy travels less than 10 knots, calls for no registraton ... and extremely unlikely that you will damage another boat ... ie 3rd Party is excessive.

Spend the $ $ on a fluorescent orange top and AA torch glowing if you plan to Travel After Dark - much better and safer if everyone can see ...

How fast will a boat go with a 20hp outboard (see details)?

Aug 23, 2009 by lmf7000 Categorized Under: Boats & Boating

We're looking to buy a new small craft for our existing 20hp four stroke Honda outboard. This outboard is very light for a 4-stroke - it weighs 49kg. We're looking at the following boats:

1. Inflatible rubber dinghy, 310cm extensive (10 feet)
2. Inflatible again, but 340cm long (11 feet)
3. A 14-foot (430cm) inflatible

We also have a alternative of either a) RIB (a rigid v-shaped hull made of fiberglass), or b) An inflatible hull, with aluminium panels covering the whip.

My question is, what kind of top speed can I expect in each case, using our 20hp outboard? If you have an opinion on the best tolerant of boat for such a smallish outboard, I'd like to hear it. The boats I listed above weigh around 50 to 60 kg each.

P.S. our reported boat is a 500cm fiberglass boat with an 85hp 2-stroke yamaha and it does about 37mph flat out with two 80kg people on advisers aboard (as measured with a GPS).

the 20 hp is too louring, relatively for the 10 or 11' and the 14 is a softer hull, because it flexes `more it takes more to push it, but I'd about it would plane with a 20 hp honda..... at about 18 to 20 mph. I don't know your load but I wouldn't presume much more than that.
good luck!

Edit. The 20 HP puts more weight aft of the CG/ and you and your passenger have to move as far forward as possible in the smaller boats. Even then when you fix power the bow will come up and it's hard to "push" the boat up on plane. Which can be done with the smaller 8 HP. But the top promptness is not going to change much over that 18- to 20 mph range, even with a much larger engine.
