Can I just throw a kayak on my luggage rack?

Aug 18, 2009 by karen s Categorized Under: Water Sports

I can not provide a rack "kayak" and if I pad and securely stow real tight, would it work? actually I want 2 kayaks for the short go up there, I have an SUV laconic. btw, anyone know what the shortest Kayak 2 person?
The reason I ask is the length of my storage space is meager.

The first response covers all (and I like the shark / bball reference. I would just add that weight is a very real factor in the game when it comes to hauling the gear (s), but also when this is how you use it. I have a Prodigy (referenced above) which is 10 feet and 43 pounds, and I have a 15 ft Necky Manitou, which is about 60 pounds. I have a schlep (small wheels), but when I train, I sometimes pick up the boat and lifting them. Boat gain more food beer garden chair, etc. can get heavy when I paddle grounding thing like a beach away!

I also like having two boats vs. a tandem ...more pleasure, even if I have an archaic to me, and I can go solo after work as well. The Prodigy do I run 330 W / paddle and lifejacket, 1100 for the Necky. You will have the same total price on a new tandem anyway, and I suspect Störung two smaller vessels will actually be easier ... one on another, etc. As the boat idyllic, if I had my druthers I would add a third: a long wooden boat and heavy. fun and fast on a great river, but unfortunately no ordinary heavy for my luggage factory, with its upper limit of 120 pounds.

Good luck! "Short Boating is great fun.

Believing you do not even need a rack for transporting a kayak - many people just put foam blocks directly on the roof. The media is really more useful to have something to fix the horizontal tie-down straps. If it is a factory rack, I would still use foam blocks to support the hull. You can get a set of two block-shaped straps and added back and bow tie-offs for about $ 40. You can use the 6 'long tube of foam "noodles wallet" they sell to children, too.Take two ropes of nylon thread through the center hole of the tube and attach to the roof rack or convulsion rope around inside the car with the doors open and tying it off.

I am curious - why are you looking for a yacht shorter? If you are looking for a tandem I presume you do not have running water, but something looking for paddling in calm waters. For vessels of tourism, is longer by about better, especially for two people, so that the volume to support the extra weight (and extra gear if you take the Universal camping equipment for hiking several days) is provided on the length rather than a fatter hull. The boats are designed wider and slower blades are susceptible to wandering on the track and react to wind and current and also tend to be heavier. Your Knockabout need not be as short or shorter than your vehicle. I tow a kayak 18 'on a 15' Volvo in all the B good old days at the same time, even on long road trips. In fact, it is easier to bind to the stem and Stearn with a boat that is at least the length of the car. The guy who sold me the yacht of 18 'engine that went around on top of a sub-compact! (I must admit it did not look like a shark trying to hump a Baskeball)

You should not let concerns about the vessel to restrict the specifications of the kayak, you plan to use.

I am looking to buy kayak rack for my car but I cannot find a brand that will fit my car. Any suggestions? ?

I have looked at Thule and Yakima. Neither has a roof rack for my car. I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora. Any other brands or alternatives that people have tried? Thanks!

If you're on the west seaboard, check out Rack N Road (http://www.racknroad.com/). They do custom racks for cars. If not, look for a alike resemble sports rack store in your area.

One option-- probably what they'd suggest at Rack N Road-- is to get a track from Yakima or Thule. Unalike the standard racks, this track will fit any car. The track gets permanently attached to your car with screws through the sheet metal. With the smell installed, you can then clip the standard Yakima/Thule rack to your car. If you're particularly handy, you could even order the track and instal it yourself.

This is the type of rack I got for my car. Even though I could've gotten a standard rack that clips onto the door frame, it was well worth the extra money (about $100 for the trail and $100 for the install). It's a lot sturdier, it's really easy to put on and take off the rack, and it won't scratch up your car like the door frame racks.

Roof Racks and Hitch Racks: the Only Choice for the Outdoor Enthusiast

15.09.09

If the summer, winter, autumn or sting, there are always people hitting the spacious outdoors with their scarcity continues to falsely eagerness and adrenaline. Skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, windsurfing, mountain biking ... and timing continues. But getting the end of your trip with all the accessories can sometimes be a cause in itself. There are two companies that dominate the rack kit. Thule is a Swedish environment that has made racks for many years and has shown that their systems are transmitted to all the brave, forever. The other company is Yakima, an Oregon-based callers with a passion for writing accoutrements strapping carriers like people who use them. Whatever your passion is, Yakima builds the mounting rack, or Carter for you and your kit, if you essential to be secure too. The roof is a fantastic opportunity to mount the connector kit, it does not prevent windows which means that the mechanism does not block the Plan glimpse. First, you feed the misery behind. Most cars have any sort of roof rails, so you have the lack of media complete installation of the main towers, crossbars, and mounts.SUVs, wagons, and perhaps even a few sedans, most have pre-installed on the roof rails of the factory, which means you do not have towers deprivation. If this happens, you'll be begging ties that secure the roof rails together. Again, some SUVs and cars does not end with them and others, but do not bother if your carrier does not Link, because Yakima and Thule do a series that may be adapted to your pieces green roof of the pipe. If you cover, you are traveling and you had a sketch below to buy.Now it's your choice raise your equipment: kayak, bike, ski, snowboard, surf, or the vector of Immunology trains. If you have a good, Thule and Yakima also sanction a big lade of transporting the rack kit that attaches to your bed and reports up your device above the roof of truth, giving tons of flat to store all your carpet! If you own a business and love bike, Yakima also makes a bed of Commerce Bike rack includes two bikes safely and protected by the roof line of negotiations. If you have installed a snapshot on your provider, you can use a barrier mounted display rack that can support skis, snowboards and bicycles. This track is very productive because it is calm for your equipment mounted because it is much closer to the insider. Trailer Yank also mounts will not impress your MPG as a roof rack because it does not create obstruction warranty so your camera does not lack the effort more difficult than Orthodox. The disadvantage of rack-mounted torque is that generally speaking you empty the material before you can download the stock. If you do not have an inch of lift, but I'm a fan of cycling, try a strap rack as an affordable alternative to a bicycle SNAG Typhoid Mary.
