Go with an adjustment .... Lotus in the paddling thrust. Side zipper sweater works best. Give the arms and torso room to move.
ALWAYS use a PFD anything ... besides peacefully or not. I have seen severe blows on the serene mountain lakes and I almost had to jump in my boat and marsh to minimize the chances of lightning go-slow. Only rookies do not fool PFD ... Not that you look at willl be a rookie too.

getting one in good time for my kid, and wondering if you have to wear one.

Only a jackass goes out in a boat, canoe, or kayak without a PFD (personal flotation device) and virtually all states include laws in their boating regulations which number provisions that insist on a "U.S. Coast Guard Approved" life vest, life jacket, or boat soften being on board a vessel for EVERY person on it. Without one, the nicest of the negatives that can happen to you is that you get ticketed by law enforcement. The worst feature that can happen? You don't EVEN want to consider it as an alternative to saving a few bucks by not buying (AND USING) a PFD. Be safe! Be occupied in safe! There is nothing macho about risking your life by ignoring common sense and common law. Accidents happen. They stumble on more to people who take risks. Kayaking without a PFD is taking a MAJOR risk, no matter HOW old you are.
